Shadowrun: Into the Cold (A Shadowrun Novella), by Mark Hill

ITS TIME TO SETTLE OLD DEBTS

Riker was just another has-been loser drowning in debt, until the offer of a lifetime fell into his lap. All he had to do was take a boring security gig, and a mysterious benefactor would make sure the Sprawls gangsters didnt sell his organs and toss his body into the Barrens. Hes been working his way up the corporate ladder ever since, and now his savior has given him his final mission: extract the brilliant scientist Valarie St. Claire from a remote Ares lab, at any cost.

Riker has every last detail planned, and if he survives the next few hours, hell finally get his life back. Hes ready to do anything and everything to be set free, but the funny thing about working with someone for years is that you start to know them. Like them. Sometimes, you even start to wonder if you both deserve better than taking orders from soulless corporations and ruthless spies.

Now theres a nagging doubt in the back of Rikers head, but with his employer wanting Dr. St. Claire delivered, and deadly Ares security trying to stop him, any hesitation could get him killed.

Should Riker fight for his life, or risk everything to start a new one?
